Memories of Paul Barter

"Paul has been one of the most inspiring and instrumental people in my life. His unique creative vision (and blatant disregard for protocol!) made me the artist I am today. Paul guided me through my years at school and taught me how to see properly. He was my mentor and great friend. I will miss him deeply."

“Throughout most of my school career I felt like a tiny fish in a huge pond until I entered the Art Department where suddenly I was special and unique and there was someone who genuinely cared about me. I look back fondly on those days and will be forever grateful to Paul for setting me on my creative path and supporting me every step of the way. It was Paul who inspired me to go into art teaching and Paul who shared my love of the natural world and the Arts.”

“I first met Paul in the ante room between the two art classrooms at George Abbott, I'd been ejected from the class next door for disruptive behaviour. Paul gave me stern talking to and a picture of a Church to copy. His response to my drawing was the reason I went to art college and the reason I now own a design agency in Hong Kong.”

“There are only a small number of key-people in ones life, and Paul was one of them, as I am sure he was for many of us who are hurting today. Paul played an important part in my life, he liberated me at school and helped a twelve year old realise that there were in fact alternatives to the kind of future life being suggested up and down the bleak and dusty school corridors. I still fondly remember the dried sunflowers in the pots around the shelves in his classroom and I can still see and hear Paul’s smile and his laughter and that very special sparkle in his eyes. Thank you Paul for being such an inspiration, for all of your life, and thank you for choosing to keeping me in your heart throughout your life. I am so proud and grateful to carry you in mine... I miss you."
